Brampton Celebrates National Indigenous Peoples Day in Garden Square Today

Today (June 21) is National Indigenous Peoples Day and the City of Brampton is inviting all its residents to celebrate.
Today (June 21) is National Indigenous Peoples Day and the City of Brampton is inviting all its residents to celebrate.
Today will highlight the rich history of Indigenous peoples in the Peel Region. Residents can come to Garden Square to celebrate the heritage, diverse cultures and outstanding achievements of First Nations, Inuit and Métis.
Festivities will take place from 12:30 pm where there will be an opening ceremony, traditional and contemporary dances, live music, storytelling, and community vendors.
Mainstage entertainment will run from 6 pm to 10 pm, featuring high-energy musical performances by award-winning Indigenous performers, iskwē and DJ Classic Roots.

The event is presented by The Indigenous Network. The network is an Indigenous Friendship Centre committed to supporting the Aboriginal community in the Region of Peel. It is a member of the Ontario Federation of Indigenous Friendship Centres.
“The City of Brampton is committed to meaningful engagement with our local Indigenous community, and supporting the Calls to Action of the 2015 Truth and Reconciliation Commission report,” said Mayor Patrick Brown. “In partnering with The Indigenous Network to host this National Indigenous Peoples Day celebration, the City is working toward those goals, collaborating with Indigenous communities, and celebrating Brampton’s diversity.”
June 21, the summer solstice, has been designated as National Indigenous Peoples Day by the Government of Canada in consultation with Indigenous groups. The summer solstice is the longest day of the year, and it has been celebrated by many Indigenous communities for generations.
