Published January 6, 2018 at 4:11 am

It’s cold and snowy here in Brampton, and pretty much anywhere you choose to road trip in Canada is going to look something like this, too. Whether you’ve got the winter blues and need a dose of adventure, or you love the cold and the snow and want to take advantage of more cities that have it, there are several destinations that are ideal for your perfect winter road trip.

So grab your friends, your family, your bae, your skates, or just yourself, and get ready for an epic road trip.

Here are five places for a winter road trip outside of Brampton.

5) Collingwood

This prime tourist spot is very picturesque, and there are an abundance of ways you can enjoy winter in Collingwood. Indulge in a winter escape at Blue Mountain, skiing, skating, snowboarding, and tubing the days away, take a break at Scandinave Spa which is said to be epic during the winter (imagine a hot tub in cold winter air, surrounded by snow – now that’s unique!), or if it’s way too cold for you, grab a hot chocolate and scope out the arts and culture scene. There’s a lot to do here, even if you just want to stroll down the picturesque sidewalks and into little shops, just less than two hours away.

4) Stratford

Another picturesque spot that’s great for a winter road trip! If you’re into arts and culture, the little town of Stratford is a good choice for a quaint getaway. Located about an hour and half from the city, the road trip won’t take hours or cost you a ton in gas money — you can even stay for the day and head home the same night. Take a distillery tour, warm up on the chocolate trail, or see some art while you’re there. It’s a good place for some shopping and cafe stops, and over all a festive town that’s well-suited for a winter getaway!

3) Montreal

Need to get further away? Take the six-hour road trip to Montreal with a group of friends or family, and you won’t be disappointed. Prepare to face the epic cold by checking out Old Montreal during the winter, skate outdoors at one of the city’s many rinks like La Fontaine, warm up at bars and restos in the city’s enviable food scene, ski on Mont Royal, rent a cabin at Mont Tremblant, or go for Igloofest from January 18-Feburary 3, 2018 for a wintery music festival. Tons to do here, and maybe you’ll pick up some Quebecois French – say bonjour!

2) Niagara Falls

Wondering whether the falls have frozen over? Why not go and see for yourself! Check out the massive display of festive lights that will be up until January 31, 2018, have some icewine, take a helicopter and see a wintery Niagara from above, have a flight of craft beer, and much, much, more – this is a good choice for a road tripper who wants a lot of options for things to do. You can even take the skywheel for a new perspective on the area in the winter if you’re not feeling that helicopter ride. Niagara is good for families, groups of friends, or couples, and it’s not too far of a trip.

1) Ottawa

Ottawa is a solid four-and-a-half hour drive that’s a yes from us for an epic winter road trip. Bring your skates to skate Rideau Canal or the first ever skating rink in front of Parliament Hill, enjoy some winter fun times during Winterlude from February 2-19, 2018,  or even take a winter hike at Gatineau Park, which is open year-round. Shop, dine, take a walk, check out a museum, and definitely peruse Byward Market while you’re there!
